Course: Google Cloud Platform Fundamentals for AWS Professionals

A one-day course with labs, aimed at AWS professionals who want to learn about the main features of Google Cloud Platform (GCP) within the four pillars of technology: networking, computing, storage and database. This course is ideal for AWS solution architects and system operations administrators familiar with AWS who want immediate hands-on experience in configuring GCP products.

Through presentations, demonstrations and hands-on labs, participants will quickly learn about the similarities, differences and initial tutorials between AWS and GCP.

Skills that participants will acquire:

  • Identify the GCP equivalents for Amazon VPC, subnets, routes, NACLs, IGW, Amazon EC2, Amazon EBS, auto-scaling, Elastic Load Balancing, Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, Amazon RDS, Amazon Redshift, AWS IAM and more.
  • Configure accounts, billing, projects, networks, subnets, firewalls, VMs, disks, automatic scaling, load balancing, storage, databases, IAM and more.
  • Manage and monitor applications.
  • Explain the differences in features and prices between the AWS and GCP models.
  • Find documentation and training.

Course prerequisites

To get the most out of this course, participants need to meet the following criteria:

  • Basic proficiency in network technologies such as subnets and routing
  • Experience with Amazon VPC, Amazon EC2 instances and disks
  • Familiarity with Amazon S3 and AWS database technologies

Module 1: Introduction to Google Cloud Platform

Module 2: Setting up accounts and invoicing

  • AWS accounts, billing and IAM roles
  • GCP accounts, billing accounts, projects and administrator configuration
  • Account configuration, billing, project and administration
  • Lab: Setting up projects and billing accounts with a free trial GCP account

Module 3: Networking

  • Amazon VPC, subnets, routes, NACLs and security groups
  • GCP networks, subnets, routes and firewall rules
  • VMs in networks
  • Lab: Add VMs, explore the standard network and test connectivity

Module 4: Working with VM instances

  • Amazon EC2 instance types, AMIs, Amazon EBS, temporary units, spot instances
  • Google Compute Engine machine types, instances, permanent disks, local SSDs, preemptive VMs
  • Deployment of VMs and web apps
  • Lab: Deploy VMs with an application via console and command line

Module 5: Application scaling and load balancing

  • Amazon EC2 launch configurations, auto-scaling groups, load balancing
